Russborough House, near Blessington, Co. Wicklow, is perhaps Ireland’s finest Palladian style country house. The house was designed by the architect Richard Castle for Joseph Leeson the earl of Milltown and was built between 1741-48. The granite house is composed of three blocks, a central two-storey house with basement. It has seven bays and a pediment supported by three-quarter columns above the entrance that is reached via a wide flight of steps. This is linked to the two matched seven –bay pavilion wings by colonnades. Internally the ground floor rooms in the central block are decorated with baroque plasterwork and the ceilings of the music room, saloon and library are the work of the Lafranchini brothers. The house is set in its own parkland and has wonderful views of the Wicklow Mountains
